Defective Starter

Check as follows:‪

  1. Verify that the engine will bar over by hand.
    1. If not, check for internal engine damage. Refer to "6.3 Internal Engine Damage" .
    2. If yes, go to step 2 .
  2. Check for battery power and ground using a test light between the positive and negative connections.
    1. If there is no power, inspect the wiring and battery condition. Repair or replace as necessary.
    2. If there is power, go to step 3 .
  3. Connect a AMP meter lead from the tester around the positive battery cable.
  4. Connect the positive red lead from the tester to the positive battery post.
  5. Connect the negative black lead from the tester to the negative battery post.

    ENGINE EXHAUST

    To avoid injury from inhaling engine exhaust, always operate the engine in a well-ventilated area. Engine exhaust is toxic.‪

  6. Engage the starter
  7. View the AMP reading when cranking the engine.
    1. If there is no AMP reading, go to step 8 .
    2. If the AMP reading is within specifications check the wiring on the Motor Control Module (MCM). Refer to "18.2 Motor Control Module" .
  8. Use a test light on wire A
    1. If there is no illumination, verify that the MCM parameter is turned on. If it is on inspect the MCM wiring.
    2. If there is illumination, go to step 9 .

  9. Check for power on wire B.
    1. If there is no power on B, replace the magnetic switch. Refer to OEM guidelines.
    2. If there is power, replace the starter. Refer to OEM guidelines.
  10. To determine if the new starter resolved no start condition, attempt to start and run the engine.
    1. If the engine starts and runs, no further troubleshooting is required. Shut down the engine.
    2. If the engine fails to crank, check for internal engine damage. Refer to "6.3 Internal Engine Damage" .
