Section 54.5
SPN 636/FMI 8

The diagnostic condition is typically CKP Sensor Time Out.‪

Section 54.5.1
Check for Multiple Codes

Check for multiple codes as follows:‪

  1. Plug in your diagnostic tool.
  2. Turn ON ignition and start the engine.
  3. Read active codes.
    1. If fault 636/3 is active in addition to fault 636/8 with the engine running, refer to "55.2.1 Open Circuit Check" .
    2. If fault 636/4 is active in addition to fault s 636/8 with the engine running, refer to "55.3.1 Short to Ground Check" .
    3. If only fault s 636/8 is active with the engine running, refer to "55.5.1 Sensor Time Out Check" .

Section 54.5.2
Sensor Time Out Check

Check for a sensor time out as follows:‪

  1. Check the CKP Sensor position.
    1. If fault 636/8 is not active after checking position, replace CKP Sensor clamping sleeve. Refer to "55.5.1.1 Verify Repairs" .
    2. If fault 636/8 is active after checking position, go to step 5 .
  2. Replace the Vehicle Speed Sensor.
    1. If fault s 636/8 is not active, refer to "55.5.1.1 Verify Repairs" .
    2. If fault s 636/8 is still active, go to step 6 .
  3. Check the flywheel position in the timing case through the inspection window using the turning tool.
    1. If sensors are out of position, repair or replace the spring bushing, as required. Erase fault code memory. See Figure "Crankshaft Position Sensor" .

    2. If sensors are not out of position, go to step 7 .
  4. Check crankshaft axial play.
    1. If axial play is not within specifications, repair or replace crankshaft thrust bearings, as required. Refer to "55.5.1.1 Verify Repairs" .
    2. If axial play is within specifications, contact the Detroit Diesel Customer Support Center (313-592-5800).
Section 54.5.2.1
Verify Repairs
