Series 50 – Section 29.4 Crankcase Pressure Test (Dynamic)

Section 29.4
Crankcase Pressure Test (Dynamic)

If practical, the use of a chassis dynamometer to obtain full load will provide the most accurate results.

  1. Using the test kit 23518757, thread the adaptor tube onto the sensor body and push the rubber hose onto the adaptor. This should be done without lubricating the hose or the adaptor tube.
  2. The sensor pigtail can be left disconnected to ease installation onto the engine. To test an engine, remove the dipstick and push the sensor assembly into the dipstick tube. Ensure there is a good seal between the sensor and the dipstick tube.
  3. Connect the pigtail to the back of the sensor and route it to the oil pressure sensor wiring harness, avoiding hot exhaust components. Be sure to secure the extra cable away from moving parts.
  4. Unplug the wiring harness from the oil pressure sensor on the left rear of the block and plug the crankcase pressure sensor cable into the oil pressure sensor wiring.
  5. Plug a DDR into the vehicle connector and prepare for a key-triggered snapshot.
  6. Drive the vehicle to get it up to operating temperature. Then, a passenger can trigger a snapshot while the desired speed and load are maintained.

Note: Optimum reading will be at peak torque, 100% load.

  7. Print the snapshot including r/min, % Load, Oil Temperature, Coolant Temperature and Turbo Boost Pressure.
  8. Once the snapshot is printed, it can be compared to those listed in Table "Crankcase Pressure Comparison vs. Oil Pressure " to determine the status of the engine.
