Series 60 – Section 2.31 Synchronous Reference Sensor Camshaft Position Sensor Camshaft Gear Cover Mounted

Section 2.31
Synchronous Reference Sensor \ Camshaft Position Sensor Camshaft Gear Cover Mounted

The Synchronous Reference Sensor \ Camshaft Position Sensor (SRS\CMP) is an electronic component that is mounted to the rear of the camshaft gear cover. See Figure "Synchronous Reference Sensor \ Camshaft Position Sensor Location" .‪

Note: The length of the SRS\CMP sensor element is 63.2 mm (2.49 in.).

The sensor portion of the SRS\CMP extends through a hole in the gear cover, and is positioned very near the rear of the camshaft gear. A bolt, inserted through a hole in the SRS\CMP bracket, secures the SRS\CMP assembly to the gear cover. The SRS\CMP connector is black in color.‪

The SRS\CMP sends a signal to the Electronic Control Unit (ECU). This signal is generated by a raised metal pin on the rear of the camshaft gear.‪

The camshaft gear pin passes by the SRS\CMP as the number one piston reaches approximately 45 degrees before Top-Dead-Center (TDC). This information is used by the ECU to determine number one piston in the firing order. See Figure "Camshaft Gear and Synchronous Reference Sensor \ Camshaft Position Sensor Pin Location" . See Figure "Synchronous Reference Sensor \ Camshaft Position Sensor Pin Installation View" .‪

Replacement of the Synchronous Reference Sensor \ Camshaft Position Sensor

The SRS\CMP is a non-serviceable item and is replaced as a unit.‪

Section 2.31.2
Removal of the Synchronous Reference Sensor \ Camshaft Position Sensor

Remove the SRS\CMP as follows:‪

  1. Disengage the locking tang on the SRS\CMP connector. Grasp the connector bodies and gently pull them apart.
  2. Using a socket and long extension, remove the SRS\CMP bolt.
  3. Remove the SRS\CMP by pulling it straight out of the gear cover.

Section 2.31.3
Installation of the Synchronous Reference Sensor \ Camshaft Position Sensor

Install the SRS\CMP as follows:‪

Note: The SRS\CMP is an electronic component. Use care upon installation.

  1. The O-ring on the sensor may be coated with clean engine oil for ease of installation.
  2. Insert the SRS\CMP into the gear cover and index the hole in the bracket with the hole in the gear cover.
  3. Insert the SRS\CMP bolt and torque it to 30-38 N·m (22-28 lb·ft).
  4. Plug the connectors together, making sure the locking tang clicks into place.
  5. Turn the ignition to the ON position. Observe the DDR or DDDL for any diagnostic code(s). If any code(s) other than code 25 is logged, refer to the Detroit Diesel Series 60 Troubleshooting Guide (6SE570).

  1. 2000 freightliner 60series. My engine fan will not shut off. When I turn key on, the fan switch will turn off and off for like the first 7 seconds then it will lock it on and it’s stays on. Thank you in advance for any help.
