Section 8.2
Drive Belts
Perform the following procedures for removal and installation of the drive belts and belt tensioner.
Section 8.2.1
Poly-V Belt Removal
Remove the poly-V belt as follows:
- Place a T-handle and socket-wrench bit on the tensioning pulley bolt. See the insert in Figure
"Poly-V Belt Removal"
.
1. Belt Tensioner with Tensioning Pulley
3. Poly-V Belt
2. T-Handle with Socket-Wrench Bit
Figure 1. Poly-V Belt Removal
- Lift the T-handle (swivel the tensioning pulley clockwise) to remove the tension from the poly-V belt. Hold the tensioning pulley in this position for the next step.
- Remove the poly-V belt from the alternator and coolant-pump pulleys. Be careful not to kink, stretch, or otherwise damage the belt.
- Lower the T-handle to return the tensioning pulley to its original position. Remove the socket-wrench bit from the pulley bolt.
- Inspect the poly-V belt for nicks, wear, or other damage. Replace the belt if necessary.
- Inspect the following parts and replace any that are damaged or worn:
- Vibration Damper
- Alternator Pulley
- Coolant-Pump Pulley
- Belt Tensioner
- Tensioning Pulley
Section 8.2.2
Poly-V Belt Installation
Install the poly-V belt as follows:
- Fit the poly-V belt on the belt pulleys. Be careful not to kink, stretch, or otherwise damage the belt. Do not fit the belt onto the tensioning pulley yet.
- Place the T-handle and socket-wrench bit on the tensioning pulley bolt. Swivel the tensioning pulley clockwise to overcome the spring tension.
- With the belt in place, lower the T-handle to return the tensioning pulley to its original position, allowing the belt tensioner to automatically put the correct tension on the belt.
- Remove the socket-wrench bit from the pulley bolt.
- Check the poly-V belt to make sure it is in the correct position and properly aligned on the pulleys.
Section 8.2.3
Belt Tensioner Removal
Remove belt tensioner as follows:
- Remove the poly-V belt from the alternator and coolant-pump pulleys. Refer to "8.2.1 Poly-V Belt Removal" .
- Remove the hex head bolt and belt tensioner from the oil-filter housing. See Figure
"Belt Tensioner Removal"
.

Section 8.2.4
Belt Tensioner Installation
Install the belt tensioner as follows:
- Align the pins on the belt tensioner with the holes in the oil-filter housing.
- Install the belt tensioner on the oil-filter housing and secure in place with the hex head bolt. Tighten the bolt 50 N·m (37 lb·ft).
- Install the poly-V belt on the alternator and coolant-pump pulleys. Refer to "8.2.2 Poly-V Belt Installation" .
