Section 117.4
SPN 3563/FMI 20

The following procedures will troubleshoot SPN 3563/FMI 20, Intake Manifold Pressure Plausibility (Low Box).‪

Section 117.4.1
Intake Manifold Pressure Plausibility

Check as follows:‪

  1. Using DDDL perform the Air Mass Adaptation (AMA) service routine.
  2. After the AMA completes, clear all faults.
  3. Start the engine and idle for three minutes.
  4. Is SPN 3563/FMI 20 active?
    1. Yes, go to step 5 .
    2. No, testing is complete, release the vehicle.
  5. Turn the engine OFF.
  6. Turn the ignition ON (Key ON, engine OFF).
  7. Monitor Compressor Inlet Pressure, Barometric Pressure and Inlet Manifold Pressure.
  8. Are all of the pressures within 0.5 PSI of each other?
    1. Yes, go to step 12 .
    2. No, go to step 9 .
  9. Is Barometric Pressure within 0.5 PSI of Inlet Manifold Pressure?
    1. Yes, replace the Compressor Inlet Pressure Sensor.
    2. No, go to step 10 .
  10. Connect a known good Inlet Manifold Pressure Sensor.
  11. Is Barometric Pressure within 0.5 PSI of Inlet Manifold Pressure?
    1. Yes, replace the Inlet Manifold Pressure Sensor.
    2. No, replace the MCM.
  12. Start the engine.
  13. At Idle, compare Compressor Inlet Pressure, Barometric Pressure and Inlet Manifold Pressure.
  14. Are all of the pressures within 0.8 PSI of each other?
    1. Yes, go to step 18 .
    2. No, go to step 15 .
  15. Is Barometric Pressure within 0.8 PSI of Inlet Manifold Pressure?
    1. Yes, replace the Compressor Inlet Pressure Sensor.
    2. No, go to step 16 .
  16. Connect a known good Inlet Manifold Pressure Sensor.
  17. Is Barometric Pressure within 0.8 PSI of Inlet Manifold Pressure?
    1. Yes, replace the Inlet Manifold Pressure Sensor.
    2. No, replace the MCM.
  18. Perform CAC inspection and leak test. Refer to OEM literature for procedure.
    1. If inspection and/or leak test fail, repair as necessary.
    2. If CAC inspection passes, obtain DDDL log file of failure and contact the Detroit Diesel Customer Support Center at 313–592–5800.
Section 117.4.1.1
Verify Repairs

Verify repairs as follows:‪

  1. Turn ignition OFF.
  2. Reconnect any electrical connections that were disconnected to perform the diagnosis.
  3. Clear codes with DDDL 7.0 or latest version.
  4. Start and bring engine up to operating temperature (over 140°F/60°C).
  5. Verify operation is satisfactory and no warning lamps illuminate. If warning lamps illuminate, troubleshoot the codes. If assistance is required, call the Detroit Diesel Customer Support Center at 313–592–5800.
