Section 1.17.1
Flywheel Housing Removal

Remove the flywheel housing as follows:‪

  1. Remove the flywheel. Refer to "1.13.1 Flywheel Removal" .
  2. Remove the oil pan and gasket.
  3. Support the engine by placing suitable jack stands under the cylinder block pan rails. Make sure not to damage the sealing surfaces of the pan rails.
  4. Remove the rear engine mounts from the flywheel housing. Refer to appropriate vehicle service manual.
  5. Remove the starter from the flywheel housing.
  6. Disconnect the Hengst® crankcase breather piping from the flywheel housing.
  7. Remove the flywheel housing mounting bolts. Then remove the flywheel housing from the cylinder block. See Figure "Flywheel Housing Assembly (exploded view)" .
  8. Remove and discard the flywheel housing gasket.

Section 1.17.2
Flywheel Housing Installation

Install the flywheel housing as follows:‪

  1. Check the flywheel housing for damage.
  2. Install a new rear radial seal. Refer to "1.8.2 Rear Radial Seal Installation" .
  3. Using a suitable scraper, such as a putty knife, clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder block and the flywheel housing. Remove any dirt or grease, and all traces of old sealant.
  4. Install the flywheel housing and new gasket onto cylinder block and secure with bolts. Torque the bolts to 70 N·m (52 lb·ft).
  5. Install the starter onto the flywheel housing. Torque the bolts to 80 N·m (59 lb·ft).
  6. Connect the Hengst® crankcase breather piping to the flywheel housing.
  7. Install the flywheel. Refer to "1.13.2 Flywheel Installation" .
  8. Install the rear engine mounts onto the flywheel housing. Refer to appropriate vehicle service manual.
  9. Install the oil pan and new gasket.
  10. Install the transmission and clutch. Refer to appropriate vehicle service manual.
