Camshaft Follower

The camshaft followers ride on the intake and exhaust lobes of the camshaft. The followers are positioned between the camshaft and the push rods, preventing excessive wear to the camshaft from the hardened steel push rods. Each follower is keyed to ensure proper alignment within the block. See Figure "Camshaft Follower Location" .‪

REPLACEMENT OF THE CAMSHAFT FOLLOWER

To determine if replacement of the camshaft follower is necessary, perform the following procedure. See Figure "Flowchart for Replacement of Camshaft Follower" .‪

Section 1.26.2
Removal of the Camshaft Follower

Remove the camshaft follower as follows:‪

1. Remove the camshaft assembly. Rerfer to section "1.20.2 Removal of Camshaft" .
2. With the engine turned upside down, remove the camshaft followers from the engine block by sliding them out of the bores wuth a push rod. See Figure "Removal of the Camshaft Follower" .

Section 1.26.2.1
Cleaning of the Camshaft Follower

Clean the camshaft followers as follows:‪

1. Clean the camshaft followers using Cindol ® 1705, or equivalent.

   NOTICE:
   When cleaning camshaft followers, DO NOT USE FUEL OIL. Fuel oil will not provide adequate lubrication. Fuel oil can work its way in between the camshaft follower roller and pin, which may cause scoring on initial startup of the engine.‪

2. Dry camshaft followers using compressed air.

   Note: Cindol ® 1705 is a registered trademark of Houghton International, Inc.

Section 1.26.2.2
Inspection of the Camshaft Follower

Inspect the camshaft follower as follows:‪

1. Visually check the camshaft follower rollers for pitting, scoring, or flat spots.
   1. If the camshaft follower rollers are pitted, scored, or have flat spots, replace components as necessary. Refer to "1.26.3 Installation of Camshaft Followers" .
   2. If the camshaft follower rollers are not pitted, scored, or have no flat spots, reuse the components. Refer to "1.26.3 Installation of Camshaft Followers" .
2. The camshaft follower roller must turn freely on its pin.
   1. If the camshaft follower roller does not rotate freely on its pin, replace the camshaft follower. Refer to "1.26.3 Installation of Camshaft Followers" .
   2. If the camshaft follower roller rotates freely on the pin, reuse the camshaft follower. Refer to "1.26.3 Installation of Camshaft Followers" .
3. Visually check the camshaft follower guide key for damage.
   1. If the camshaft follower guide key is damaged, replace the component. Refer to "1.26.3 Installation of Camshaft Followers" .
   2. If the camshaft follower guide key is not damaged, reuse the component. Refer to "1.26.3 Installation of Camshaft Followers" .
4. Visually check the camshaft follower body for major scuff marks or scratches.
   1. If the camshaft follower body has major scuff marks or scratches, replace the component. Refer to "1.26.3 Installation of Camshaft Followers" .
   2. If the camshaft follower body has no major scuff marks or scratches, reuse the component. Refer to "1.26.3 Installation of Camshaft Followers" .
5. Measure the camshaft follower on axis 90 ° apart.
   1. If the diameter is not within 29.944-29.965 mm (1.179-1.180 in.), replace the component. Refer to "1.26.3 Installation of Camshaft Followers" .
   2. If the diameter is within 29.944-29.965 mm (1.179-1.180 in.), reuse the component. Refer to "1.26.3 Installation of Camshaft Followers" .
6. Examine the camshaft follower roller for scoring, pitting or flat spots.
   1. If the camshaft follower rollers have scoring, pitting or flat spots, replace the camshaft follower. Refer to "1.26.3 Installation of Camshaft Followers" .
   2. If the camshaft follower roller is not damaged, reuse the camshaft follower. Refer to "1.26.3 Installation of Camshaft Followers" .
7. Measure the total side clearance of the roller. See Figure "Camshaft Follower Roller Clearance" .
   1. If the camshaft follower dimensions exceed 0.13 mm to 0.53 mm (0.005 in. to 0.021 in.), replace the camshaft follower. Refer to "1.26.3 Installation of Camshaft Followers" .
   2. If the camshaft follower meets the dimensions 0.13 mm to 0.53 mm (0.005 in. to 0.021 in.), reuse the component. Refer to "1.26.3 Installation of Camshaft Followers" .

   Note: Camshaft follower roller pin and roller are not serviceable.

8. Measure the total diametric clearance of the roller. See Figure "Camshaft Follower Roller Clearances" .
   1. If the diametric clearance exceeds 0.115 mm (0.0045 in.), replace the camshaft follower. Refer to "1.26.3 Installation of Camshaft Followers" .
   2. If the diametric clearance meets the 0.115 mm (0.0045 in.) dimension, reuse the component. Refer to "1.26.3 Installation of Camshaft Followers" .

9. Measure the diameter of the camshaft follower body. See Figure "Camshaft Follower Diametric Clearance" .
   1. If the camshaft follower body dimensions exceed 29.944-29.965 mm (1.179-1.180 in.), replace the camshaft follower.
   2. If the camshaft follower meets the dimensions 29.944-29.965 mm (1.179-1.180 in.), reuse the component.

Section 1.26.3
Installation of Camshaft Followers

Install the camshaft followers as follows:‪

1. Apply a light coat of engine lubricating oil onto the camshaft followers.
2. With the engine turned upside down, align the camshaft follower guide key with the keyway in the cylinder block bore and install the followers. See Figure "Camshaft Follower Diametric Clearance" .

3. Install the camshaft. Refer to "1.20.3 Installation of Camshaft" .
4. Rotate the engine back to the upright position.
5. Install the push rods into the cylinder head. See Figure "Camshaft Push Rod Installation" .
