Series 50 – Section 15.3 Ignition Wire Harness

Section 15.3
Ignition Wire Harness

The ignition wire harness conducts high voltage electricity from the ignition coil packs to the spark plugs. Current shunts can occur if any component in the system is damaged, or if the interface between the ignition boot and the spark plug is dirty or oily.‪

NOTICE:

Do not allow the spark plug wires to contact any engine or vehicle component which would cause rubbing on the insulation during engine operation. Contact with engine or vehicle can cause damage to the spark plug wires.‪

NOTICE:

Do not allow spark wires to kink during handling. Kinking of spark plug wires can cause damage.‪

NOTICE:

Do not allow spark plug boot or spark plug wire contact with engine oil. Exposure to engine oil can cause damage.‪

Section 15.3.1
Removal of Ignition Wire Harness

Remove the ignition wire harness as follows:‪

  1. Pull ignition harness terminals from the ignition coil at the coil towers.
  2. Rotate the boot at the rocker cover until the boot slots clear the retainer tangs.
  3. Pull the boot straight up and out of the spark plug wells.
  4. Inspect the ignition wire harness. Refer to "15.3.1.1 Inspection of Ignition Wire Harness" .
Section 15.3.1.1
Inspection of Ignition Wire Harness

Inspect the ignition wire harness as follows:‪

  1. Visually check the ignition wire harness for cracks in the insulation or areas where the insulation has been damaged.
    1. If damage is found, replace as necessary.
    2. If no damage is found, reuse the ignition wire harness.
  2. Visually check the ignition wire harness for dirt, debris, and engine oil.
    1. If contamination is found, clean as necessary and apply a light coat of dielectric grease to the inside of the ignition boot where it contacts the spark plug. Reuse component. Refer to "15.3.2 Installation of Ignition Wire Harness" .
    2. If no contamination is found, reuse the ignition wire harness and apply a light coat of dielectric grease to the inside of the ignition boot where it contacts the spark plug. Refer to "15.3.2 Installation of Ignition Wire Harness" .

Section 15.3.2
Installation of Ignition Wire Harness

Install the ignition wire harness as follows:‪

  1. Insert the spark plug boot onto the spark plug and ensure that the slots clear the retainer tangs.
  2. Rotate the spark plug boot into position.
  3. Press the ignition wire harness connectors on the coil towers corresponding to the cylinder positions indicated on the label. Ensure that each connector is properly seated on the coil tower. See Figure "Ignition Wire Harness and Waste Harness Connector Location" .
