Troubleshooting Flash Code 53, PID 253/FMI 12/2

The following procedure will troubleshoot Flash Code 53. ‪

Section 55.2.1
Multiple Code Check

Perform the following steps to check for multiple codes.‪

1. Turn vehicle ignition switch ON.
2. Plug in the diagnostic tool.
3. Read active codes.
   1. If codes other than 253/12 or 253/2 are logged, service them first.
   2. If codes 253/12 or 253/2 are the only codes logged, reprogram the ECM/ECU. Refer to "55.2.2 Test for Codes" .

Section 55.2.2
Test for Codes

Perform the following steps to test for codes.‪

1. Start and run the engine.
2. Read active codes with diagnostic tool.
   1. If active code 253/2 is logged, and no other codes are logged, install a test ECM/ECU. Refer to "55.2.2.1 Verify Repairs" .

   Note: It is recommended that a "Test" ECM/ECU be tried first to determine the need to replace the ECM/ECU. For information concerning ECM/ECU replacement, refer to section 2.9 in the service manual.

   2. If no codes are logged, troubleshooting is complete.

Verify Repairs

Perform the following steps to verify repairs.‪

1. Start and run the engine.
   1. If no codes are logged, troubleshooting is complete.
   2. If codes are logged, contact the Detroit Diesel Customer Support Center (313–592–5800).
