Troubleshooting Flash Code 64, PID 103/FMI 8/0
For all EGR related codes, always refer to "20.18 Exhaust Gas Recirculation System Basic Checks for Series 60 Engines" , “Exhaust Gas Recirculation System Basic Checks,”and perform all the checks.
The following procedure will troubleshoot Flash Code 64 p103/8 or 0.
Section 63.2.1
Turbocharger Overspeed Check
Perform the following steps to check for turbocharger overspeed:
- Disconnect turbo speed sensor connector. See Figure
"Turbo Speed Sensor"

- Measure resistance between cavity 2 and battery ground. See Figure
"Turbo Speed Sensor Wiring"

- If the resistance measurement is greater than or equal to 5 Ω, replace the sensor. Verify repair. Refer to "63.2.1.1 Verify Repairs" .
- If the resistance measurement is less than 5 Ω, replace the wire. Verify repair. Refer to "63.2.1.1 Verify Repairs" .
Section 63.2.1.1
Verify Repairs
Perform the following steps to verify repairs for the EGR valve:
- Connect all connectors.
- Start and run the engine.
- Road test the engine.
- If code 64 was not logged, no further troubleshooting is required.
- If code 64 was logged, refer to "20.18 Exhaust Gas Recirculation System Basic Checks for Series 60 Engines" , “Exhaust Gas Recirculation System Basic Checks,”and perform all the checks Then call the Detroit Diesel Customer Supprt Center (313–592–5800) or try a test ECM/ECU.
- If checks passed for the VPOD test (refer to "20.18 Exhaust Gas Recirculation System Basic Checks for Series 60 Engines" ), no further troubleshooting is required.
- If checks were not performed (refer to "20.18 Exhaust Gas Recirculation System Basic Checks for Series 60 Engines" ), perform those checks first.
